Cleansing, Toning & Moisturizing – Why is it important?

Hi my Lovelies, Hope you all are doing great. Today I will be sharing the most important part of our daily skincare routine – Cleansing, Toning and Moisturizing also known as CTM routine. Most of us about know about CTM but do we really know the importance of it? One needs to follow all the steps of this basic skincare routine in order to achieve the benefits of a flawless and glowing skin. We tend to skip a step or two and that leads us not benefiting our skin.

To ensure that you have a radiant skin all you need to do is spare 20 minutes from your busy schedule for your skin – 10 minutes in the morning when you wake up and 10 minutes before bedtime everyday. Now, let us first understand.

CTM and its importance

It is the most crucial part of the CTM routine. Cleansing the skin regularly is very essential to keep it away from dirt, pollution and harmful effects of makeup. These can block the pores of the skin and lead to breakouts. Soap is not advisable to clean the skin as it dries out the skin. A good face wash should be used on daily basis which deep cleanses the skin and does not lead to any side effects. Also this should not be repeated frequently or rigorously as this may take away all the natural oils from the skin making it super dry.

Cleansing for makeup lovers

Makeup lovers should take extra care when cleansing your face of makeup since if the makeup remains on your skin for a longer duration it may lead to allergic reactions. Also be extra careful not to rub it too much as this may harm the skin. It is always advisable to use makeup cleansing wipes before cleaning the face with oil and then a good cleansing face wash.

While choosing a cleanser go for the one that foams well, provides hydration and does not dry out the skin. Also, ensure that you know your skin type and opt for a cleanser accordingly for instance if your skin is oily go for an oil control cleanser. Those having acne prone skin look for something that fights acne. There are numerous cleansers for sensitive, oily, normal, dry and acne prone skin.

For removing stubborn makeup use any oil such as olive or coconut oil or even baby oil as it acts as an amazing skin cleanser. These not only cleanse the skin really well but also nourishes it. Massage your face with generous amount of oil and leave it on your skin for about 3-5 minutes until it loosen off the makeup on your face. Rub it gently and wipe it with a cotton pad or a wash cloth followed by a face wash or a cleanser.

For a homemade cleanser you can use raw milk. Dip a cotton ball in the raw milk and clean your face with this in circular motions. This will get rid off all the impurities and accumulate it on the cotton. Follow by washing it off with cold water.

You can also use a mixture of Bengal gram (Besan), Milk cream (Malai) and Turmeric paste and apply it on the face. Leave it for about 10 minutes. This will eliminate the dead cells of the skin and cleanse it well. Once the pack dries up massage it as you would for a scrub and wash it with cold water as this will act as an stringent and close the pores.

This forms the second part of the CTM routine which most of us tend to skip. It has been debated about by numerous cosmetologists. But the fact that it does make a difference if used regularly definitely means that it should be used as a part of the CTM routine. If at all there are remains of dirt inspite of cleansing it can be eradicated by toning. Toning helps in eliminating the dead skin cells, reduces the size of the pores, provides hydration and deep cleanses the skin while reducing the possibility of breakouts and forming blackheads. It acts as an astringent that tightens the skin and protects it from harmful dirt and pollution while developing a layer of healthy skin cells. It helps in reinstating the skin’s natural PH balance.

Opt for a toner that is suitable to your skin type and avoid those containing alcohol as it may damage the collagen under the surface of the skin.

For a homemade toner you can use rose water as it works as the best toner for all skin types. For oily skin you can use diluted and refrigerated green tea solution. This acts as an effective toner as green tea contains antioxidants that help in maintaining supple and smooth skin. You can either spritz it on your face or take a small amount of the toner on the cotton pad and swipe it all over the face.

This is the last step of the CTM routine. Cleansing and toning opens the pores of the skin and leaves it bare. The skin loses its moisture so it is very important to moisturize it. A well moisturized skin is soft, smooth, radiant and prevents skin aging. Daily skin moisturizing aids in restoring the skin hydration while enhancing its texture.

It is advisable to moisturize the skin twice daily after cleansing and toning each morning and night. Apply moisturizer on damp skin using your fingertips so that the water stays intact in the skin and avoid applying too much as it may lead to clogged pores and blackheads. Light moisturizer acts as a barrier between makeup and skin and it prevents the daily wear and tear caused by our lifestyle while preventing it from drying and maintaining the elasticity of the skin; lack of which may lead to wrinkles and fine lines.

Opt for an appropriate moisturizer for your skin. If you have dry skin go for a heavy moisturizer that is specifically curated for dry skin. Oily skinned beauties should opt for a light oil free moisturizer that would moisturize the skin without making it greasy. Never skip this step of CTM. A moisturizer with SPF would be an ideal one as it can provide sun protection.

For a homemade moisturizer you can use Aloe vera, honey or olive oil as these act as amazing natural moisturizers. Apply one of these and let it stay for about 10 minutes and then rinse it off with water. Apply it on regular basis to have a smooth, supple and healthy skin.

Another important step of a good skin care routine apart from CTM is exfoliation. This step is also essential just like the other 3 steps which should be done once or twice a week. This helps in eliminating the dead skin cells and forms a layer of new cells. Exfoliation helps in restoring the natural glow of the skin.

For homemade exfoliators you can use sugar, oatmeal or coffee scrub. Sugar grains are small and rough and olive oil along with sugar can act as an amazing exfoliant. Sugar includes glycolic acid that helps in naturally breaking down the dead skin cells and reduces fine lines. Oatmeal is an excellent exfoliant for sensitive skin. Caffeine is known to reduce the puffiness around the eyes. Add a little amount of olive oil to the grounded coffee and apply it on the skin. Leave it for about 10 minutes and rinse it off with water.

So follow a good skin care routine and have a healthy and glowing skin.
